Scott’s Fall 2019 show during New York Fashion Week was rendered in near black and white, and featured clickbait-worthy words like “Scandal,” “Tragedy” and “Psycho, that colorless newsprint aesthetic even carried over into the model’s manicures and hairs, with several models wearing black blunt bob wigs topped off with a bit of white paint

Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2019

Ended soon

The collection itself pays homage to departed brand founder Yves Saint Laurent’s personal wardrobe. The designer favored slim-cut suits and high-waisted trousers with an understated Parisian flair, and that was present in many of Vaccarello’s looks. The inspiration also manifested in louche-fitting shirts and black leather jackets with lapels—a more old-school take on the biker jackets that have become a modern Saint Laurent staple. He was also a fan of Marrakech, Morocco, and plenty of the patterns and motifs in the collection referenced that, especially appropriate for a Spring/Summer collection.

Valentino Spring/Summer 2019

Standing ovations are not given lightly in fashion. In fact, over the decade I’ve gone to the shows – the exact number of years Pierpaolo Piccioli has served as creative director for Valentino – I have never seen an entire room stand for a designer the way we did on Sunday evening at Les Invalides. It’s an occurrence you can only hope translates to pictures and videos: dresses so simple in essence, yet so breath-taking in stature. It was fifteen minutes that felt totally right, not because everything was perfect, but because it was real, and because something real could make you feel that way. “I think today, real freedom is to be whoever you want to be, wherever you are. You don’t need to escape. I don’t like escape,” Piccioli said in a preview. His creations came out in swift procession, on casual flat sandals and espadrilles plumed majestically in ostrich, one silhouette more powerful than the other. “I’m not looking for big efforts on the runway. I think it’s a moment now when you have to show real fashion,” he noted. His collection had all the expertise, volume and glamour of those recent Valentino haute couture shows – so intoxicating they have given new life to the old institution across the fashion map – but expressed in a ready-to-wear ease that is anything but easy to conceive.

Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2019

In an era ruled by a millennially-fuelled desire for authenticity in all corners of life, our attraction to sportswear is too significant to be turned into a mere tool for retail. That search for authenticity has become synonymous with a much bigger development in how we approach our wardrobes. The age of athleisure defines a new time in fashion – a time of real change – where designers like Gvasalia and Abloh, and even a Savile Row trained tailor like McCartney, are empowered to create new ways of dressing outside of the boundaries of the archaic dress codes we’ve taken for granted for so long. Through those glasses, athleisure almost starts to feel like the unsung hero of fashion’s advancement. It almost deserves a nicer name.
